Fourth of July

I watched the fireworks from my brother's front lawn. The skies were dark and lightning flashed in the clouds. A group of neighbors were camped out in blankets on the lawn. It was surprisingly cold and windy. We watched the lights from a faraway stadium dance and flicker and then go out. It was nearing 10 o'clock.

As the first trail shot up into the sky, the sprinkler system on the lawn burst into action. The first explosion sparkled in the sky as the water sprayed the family. They screamed and ran back into their house.

The fireworks looked low to the ground. The wind blew them sideways. Bright spheres formed with each new launch, the boom of the explosion reaching us seconds after. My nephew walked closer. He was watching his first fireworks display.
