June 28, 2005Clouded memoriesLast night the sky was overcast. Clouds had descended on the city. Walking down Thompson I saw the base of skyscrapers, their upper stories shrouded by the weather. I was reminded of the mountains in northern Vietnam. I was reminded of zipping between Sapa and Bac Ha on the back of a motorcycle, cutting through the mist. I seem to remember it being four hours each way, but that doesn't seem possible.I also remembered the World Trade Center, and how it used to stand at the end of the street. How I would walk towards it every night on my way home. It could have been there behind the clouds, hidden as the Empire State Building was hidden and, for a moment, I could have believed it was.
