A return to porcelain

Last night I attended my first ceramics class in a year. The teacher and classroom were familiar; the students were not. I settled near my usual place and after class introductions (I said I wanted to make objects with greater volume and less mass) began to wedge my clay.

It had been some time since I had been behind a wheel and I tried to take it slow. I spent my time centering the clay; I applied different pressures in an attempt to retain a feel for the stuff. I centered the clay and then I would knock it off-center. I moved the column of clay up and then down and then up again. I began to make my opening.

Some time later I had finished my first pot, a jug-like vase similar to those I had made the year before. The teacher walked by, and welcomed me back to class. She took a look at the pot. "You still got it," she said. I then proceeded to remove the pot from the wheelhead, slicing through the bottom as I did.
